Suunto Core

Suunto Core
Suunto is a leader in navigational tools. So, needless to say, when I heard about the Suunto Core I was anxious to get my hands on one.  Sometimes things are easier said than done.  Apparently these things are selling like bottled water in hell so most places are out of stock.  So, you ask yourself, is it worth it?  Well, after briefly owning a Casio Pathfinder I feel that the Core is miles ahead in both features and ease of use. The Core offers numerous features that any adventure enthusiast will find useful.  In addition to everything you would expect to find on a watch (such as stopwatch and countdown timer) the Core also features second time zone, sunrise/sunset, barometer, altimeter, water depth (good to 33 feet), thermometer, and compass.  The functionality of the compass, altimeter, and barometer as well as their related features make this watch a winner. You're not likely to leave this watch home on your next trip.

Suunto Core - AltimeterThe Core has a feature that changes the mode it is in (altimeter or barometer) but locks the other feature to provide accurate readings.  When in barometer mode, a 6-hour trend indicator is shown on the time display for quick reference.  And if the Core senses a large drop in barometric pressure (indicating a potential approaching storm) it will activate the storm warning to alert you.  Although it may not be accurate for long range orienteering, the compass is plenty accurate enough for day hiking or backpacking, and declination can be set in the menu.  For some strange reason the light flickers about twice a second in the compass mode.  You can also lock a heading and the Core will direct you to stay on course.

Suunto Core - CompassThe menu is easy to use and straightforward.  The features on the Core are extremely intuitive and easy to use, even without the manual at hand.  The ability to activate the light with the press of any button makes it quite simple to use at night, although I think the addition of a light sensor to activate the light only in low light conditions would serve to extend the battery life.  I would also like to go directly to a function instead of having to cycle through them.  That said, the Core is the watch to have if you are in the market for one with altimeter, barometer and compass features.  Before you buy any ABC watch at least take a good look at the Suunto Core.

Suunto Core - Barometer GraphIt is also worth noting that there is a women's model that looks a little better on small wrists then the huge footprint of the Core.  The Lumi is identical in operation but designed for the ladies. [UPDATE 12-19-2008] It seems the lower right button has stopped working on my Core.  I will update when I get it fixed. [UPDATE 3-17-2009] I finally received my new watch from Suunto.  It only took them two months; but on the bright side I now have a new watch.  I question the customer service when it takes two months to grab a new watch off the shelf and box it up.  My love for this watch is fading as I run into problems.  I have been seeing a lot of long term negatives from other sources. [UPDATE 1-3-2010] I should have mentioned previously that the once the low battery indicator shows the watch can't be trusted.  The digits will be begin to fade first and you will notice features not operating correctly such as the altimeter/barometer not switching correctly.  If you notice fading digits or your Core acting a little strangely, you would be well advised to swap batteries. [UPDATE 12-27-2011] This watch is officially dead now. I'm not sure of the cause but the watch is completely dead. I am severely questioning the quality of Suunto based on this development. Consider how much you really need the features before you spend the money on this watch.
